Paula Ferry Turocy - Graduated 2004

Paula was an outstanding athlete during her high school career in Track & Field and Volleyball where she earned 4 and 3 varsity letters respectively and one year as a Varsity Cheerleader.

Paula’s name was etched in the record books several times at BL with her impressive Track & Field talents.  She holds 7 school records in 6 individual events (100m-12.7, 100H-15.0, 200m-25.93, 300H-47.1, HJ-5’3”, LJ-18’4” and 4x200 Relay); and the Columbiana County 100 HH record and the OVAC long jump record.  She also holds 7 County titles, 6 OVAC titles, 4 Regional titles and was a 6 time OHSAA state placer including 4 consecutive places in Long Jump.  Paula was named an OVAC Team Caption, 2-time Youngstown Area All Star, 3-time County MVP and the Greater Youngstown Track Officials Assoc. Top Track Performer for in 2004.  In 2001, she earned recognition as the First Freshman Athlete from BL (male or female) to qualify for the OHSAA State Meet where she also placed and remains the only one to date.  In 2004, Paula became only the 2nd Woman in Col. Co. history to place at State 4 consecutive years.  Her accomplishments are many and her performances are remembered throughout the Track and Field circuit.

Paula was also an exceptional Volleyball player where she received multiple awards in Hitting, Setting, Points, Digs, Aces and an All-Everything Award.  She was named to the District 1 Div. II First Team as well as the OVAC District I Senior All-Star Team.  Their team was the 2002 OVAC 4A Champions and the 2003 Runners-Up.

Paula earned her BA in Family & Child Development from the University of Akron in 2009 and her Masters in Higher Education Administration in 2011.  Collegiately, she competed in Track & Field in the Heptathlon and Pentathlon and was part of the MAC conference Championship Team and received National provisional qualifying marks.  In 2009, she married Frank Turocy and on July 1, 2011 gave birth to their first child, Isabella Reese.  They currently reside in Canfield Ohio.  She is the daughter of Greg & Terry Ferry.


Jack Havice - Graduated 1968

Jack was an outstanding athlete who excelled in wrestling during his high school career.

After a slow start his freshman year winning just 2 of his 6 matches at 103 pounds, he began to see his hard work pay off in his sophomore season.  Returning at 103 pounds, Jack earned a record of 12 wins and 7 losses, he was named the teams Most Improved Wrestler, was 2nd in the North Canton Holiday Tournament, was the NE Sectional Runner-Up where the team earned 4th overall and he placed 4th in both the Beaver Local Invitational and the Carrollton Invitational.

Jack’s continued to be very successful in his Junior season with an impressive 17 and 1 record at 103 lbs. and 112 lbs.  He was named the Most Valuable Wrestler, the NE Sectional Champ with the teams being champions, Carrollton Invitational Champion, Most Points scored with 19.

Finishing his high school wrestling career, Jack also had an excellent senior year with a record of 23 and 2.  He was the team’s Most Valuable Wrestler, Team Captain, the Beaver Local Triangular Champion, the Louisville Tournament Champion, NE Sectional Champion recording a record 4 pins were the team was 2nd overall.

Jack currently resides in the Columbus area.


Rachel McCoy - Graduated 2004

Rachel’s basketball talent will be remembered at Beaver Local for years to come as she is the Highest Scoring Athlete of both girls and boys who compiled 1,215 points during her high school basketball career.  She’s quite humble and quick to give credit to her teammates for their hard work on the court.

During the 2003-2004 season, Rachel received the following honors:  1st Team Division II All Ohio, AP Eastern District Player of the Year, Captains Award, 4 year Letter Winner, 1st Team District 5, 1st Team Columbiana County, 1st Team All Review, 1st Team Morning Journal, 1st Team Salem News, OVAC All-Star Game and District 5 All Start Game participant.

She was a 2 year Team Captain and Team MVP for 2003-2004 and the Leading Offensive Player with 22.6 points per game average which includes scoring 41 points in one contest.  Rachel was the Leading Rebounder with 14.6 per game average.

Rachel also excelled in Volleyball receiving 3 Varsity Letters and a number of accolades for her performance.  She was part of the 2002 OVAC 4A Championship Team and the 2003 OVAC Runners-Up.

She is the true definition of a Student-Athlete graduating as a class Valedictorian with a 4.042 GPA and led her class in Community Service hours.  Rachel went on to attend Grove City College playing Basketball for 3 years where she set a new school record of Blocked Shots and surpassed the 1,000 point scoring mark with 1,120.  She graduated in 2008 with a BS in Molecular Biology and went on to LECOM recently graduating with a PharmD.

Rachel is the daughter of Ed and Loretta McCoy of East Liverpool.  She currently resides in Charleston SC and is employed by Target as a Pharmacist.


Robert Shannon - Graduated 2005

Robert Shannon Jr. is the son of Robert Shannon Sr and the late Becky Sue Shannon who passed away from cancer when he was just 9.  He soon had another mother figure in his life, Connie Green.  Robert has 2 sisters, Jena and Sera.  Family, friends, teachers & coaches helped Robert develop into a disciplined student athlete and a compassionate young man.

Robert earned varsity letters in Basketball and Football, but his passion has always been Baseball since he was a young child and has loved the game for 18 years.  During a summer league tournament when he was 13 years old, he was invited to play in the Youngstown “B” league and began traveling both winters and summers from E Liverpool to Youngstown where he honed his craft.  Playing for the Astro Falcons from the “B” league, Robert was soon recognized by many collegiate scouts.  His skill and dedication to the sport helped bring Beaver Local Baseball some of their most successful years where he was a 4-year letterman.

Robert led his teams to the Sectional Championship game his sophomore year and junior years with close losses.  During his senior year, he anchored the team to a dramatic Sectional semi-final game win pitching the entire game and hitting a game tying double in the 7th.  The Beavers then advanced to the Sectional Championship game were his performance was one for the ages.  Robert threw a No Hitter against the reigning OVAC champions allowing just one ball to reach beyond the infield and striking out 13 batters.  The team ended their season as District Runners-Up and set the best school record in team history.  Robert’s hard work earned him a Division I scholarship to the University of Miami in Oxford OH were he pitched against many of the top teams in the nation.

His awards and remarkable stats speak for themselves.  Robert had 13 lifetime homeruns along with 70 RBIs.  He was awarded 1st Team All-Conference in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005; 1st Team Steel Valley; and OVAC All Star Team in 2005.  His pitching stats rival the best of the area with a Lifetime 23-6 record, 184 innings, 276 strikeouts allowing just 120 hits and 77 walks.  Impressively, he maintained a 1.29 ERA for his HS career.

Robert now resides in Wellsville OH and will obtain his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education with a Minor in Coaching in 2011.  His passion and knowledge of baseball inspired him to continue to work with a variety of youth programs and remain in the area with his fiancé, Angelene Volino.


David Thompson - Graduated 1977

Dave was one of the Best All-Around Athletes who excelled in whatever sport he chose to participate in at Beaver Local.  Born and raised in Elkton, he is the son of Dave and the late Rachel Thompson and has 5 brothers and 2 sisters.  His biggest fan was his mom.

Dave lettered 4 years in Baseball.  He was named USA Who’s Who High School All-American, Most Valuable Player, 1st Team All-County, All-Area Junior and Senior years, All-State Honorable Mention and still holds BL school batting average record that he had his senior year of .644.

Dave lettered 2 years in basketball.  He was MVP, All-County 1st Team, All-Area 2nd Team and All State Honorable Mention his senior year when he was the teams leading scorer averaging 16 points per game.

He also lettered 1 year in football playing his senior year where he was named Most Valuable Defensive Back and 2nd Team All-County.  He received other accolades throughout his high school career.

Dave went on to play 1 year of baseball at Adrian College in Michigan.

Dave is employed at Zidian Specialty Foods in Youngstown, Ohio.  He resides in New Waterford with his wife Renee and daughter Kyler.


Frank Blankenship - Special Category

Frank served as Superintendent of Beaver Local schools from 1991 to 2000 and previously held positions as Principal and educator.

As BLHS principal and superintendent of schools, Frank was instrumental in the establishment of High School Varsity Softball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Reserve Baseball, Reserve Softball and Girls Tennis.

He was successful in acquiring additional land for the construction of the track/tennis complex and the initial planning of the track.

Frank and his wife Fonda made efforts to attend a majority of BLHS home and away games in support of the student athletes.  Frank currently lives in Florida.
