Dan earned letters in 3 sports and captained the football and wrestling teams. He was selected to both the all county and all Evening Review football teams for three consecutive years. Dan also received special mention on the Northeast Inland all district team and was a participant in the Penn/Ohio Football Classic.
On the wrestling mat, Dan was a 2-time Everett Hoppel Memorial Tournament champion. He had over 70 varsity wins and was a 2-time district qualifier and a sectional runner-up.
Dan was honored with the distinguished athlete award as well as the Hearld Star athlete of the year. He is a marketing representative for the Scott Electric Company. He and his wife, Beth, have two children: Joshua and Katie.
Jenny Carroll- Graduated 2002
Jenny graduated in 2002 after earning 8 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She was a member of the sectional champion and district runner-up softball teams in 2000. In 2001 Jenny was named best defensive player, first team all county, first team all area and first team eastern district. In 2002 she was named best offensive player, team M.V.P. first team all county and all area and first team all eastern district. Jenny was also a 2-time Archie Griffin award winner.
Jenny went on to play softball at Marietta College where she set several individual records and was selected as the National Fast-pitch Coaches' Association scholar athlete three times. She is the only Marietta College softball player to be named to both the academic and athletic all-America teams.
Jenny has traveled extensively in Europe while a member of a traveling softball squad. She is currently an assistant softball coach at Heidelberg College where she is pursuing a master's degree in education.
John Croxall - Graduated 1978
A 1978 Graduate, John was a 4 year letter winner in baseball and a 3 year letter winner basketball. He was the 1978 Columbiana County and Evening Review Player of the Year. John was voted Special Mention All Ohio that year as well as second team all eastern Ohio, and was a member of the 1978 sectional basketball championship team. He averaged 20 points a game his senior year, set the school record at that time with 212 assists and was the 1978 Dike Beede Award recipient.
He and his wife Linnie reside in Florida and have two children: Janea and Alison. John is regional controller and operation oversight with the Nextran Trucking Company.
Wayne King, Jr.- Graduated 1976
A 1976 Beaver Local graduate, Wayne earned a total of 9 varsity letters in three sports. In football he was selected to the all county and all tri-county squads in his senior year. Wayne's greatest achievements were in baseball. He was selected to the all county squad as a sophomore, junior and senior and was honored as the M.V.P. as a senior.
Wayne as brought notoriety to Beaver Local even after graduating; he received a scholarship to play baseball at Ohio University where he was a 4-year starting catcher and earned all conference honors. He was invited to attend spring training by the Seattle Mariner Organization.
Wayne currently serves as athletic director and head baseball coach at Joliet Junior College in Illinois where he is the winningest coach in their history and has 2 national junior college championships. He and his wife, Janine, have 2 children: Stacey and Kelsey.
Barbara Mathess- Special Category
After graduation from East Liverpool High School in 1965, Barbara attended Ohio University and graduated in 1969 with a BS Ed in health, physical education and recreation. She began her career at Beaver Local in the fall of 1969. When the Ohio High School Athletic Association recognized girls' sports, Barb became the first volleyball and basketball coach at Beaver Local. She coached both varsity and middle school volleyball for a total of 24 years amassing more than 125 varsity wins. She was also responsible for the initiation of the middle school program in the late 1980's.
She was voted Columbiana County volleyball coach-of-the-year and Evening Review coach-of-the-year in 1988 and in 1991; her team was the first OV AC volleyball champions from Beaver Local.
Barb has contributed to Beaver Local Athletics in many other ways over the years including being scorekeeper for basketball and wrestling, being an active member of the booster club, and holding office in the Beaver Local Athletic Hall of Fame from its inception until the present day.
Barb continued coaching even after her retirement from teaching in 2001 (after 32 years). She and her husband, Steve, have been married thirty-eight years and reside in Wellsville.
Mark Merriman- Graduated 1976
Mark graduated from Beaver Local and played on the golf team for four years and was a part of the undefeated team in 1972. He was a three-year letter winner and two- time MVP. He was a team and match medalist numerous times and qualified for districts twice. Mark's golfing ability enabled him to earn a scholarship to Youngstown State University.
Mark started keeping stats in football and basketball in 1972, and has been doing radio and newspaper correspondence for football since then. This season will mark his 36th year as statistician for the football team. He and his wife, Dana, have one daughter, Amber. Mark is employed at the East Liverpool Elks Lodge and by M & M Vending.
Bob Tatgenhorst- Graduated 1980
A 1980 graduate, Bob won a total of 9 varsity letters in football, wrestling, baseball and track. He captained both the football and baseball teams in 1979-80 and was selected MVP of the football team. Bob was also honored as the MVP of the inaugural Penn/Ohio Classic football game. He also captured All County football honors in 1978 and 1979 (County MVP in 1979) and all Ohio honors that same year. In 1980, Bob was selected to the all county baseball team.
Bob received a scholarship to West Liberty State College and served as an assistant football coach at Beaver Local from 1987-1992. He married his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Adkins, and they have three daughters: Stacey, Brittany and Sydney. Bob is the safety coordinator for V & M Star Steel Company in Youngstown.
Chris Winesburg- Graduated 2000
Chris was a 3-year starter in basketball where he averaged 18.7 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. The Review and Morning Journal selected Chris to the all-area first team. He was also selected to the all O.V.A.C. first team, and was the runner-up to the player of the year in the northeast district. He was also named to the all-Ohio first team in basketball (the first Beaver Local basketball player to be so honored).
Chris graduated recently from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and is currently serving with Pennsylvania State Police.
