John Betteridge - Graduated 1975

John played four years of football in high school.  He earned “Varsity B” letters in 1972, 1973 and 1974.  John played on the first undefeated football team in Beaver Local history in 1973 (10-0 with a tough season schedule).  John broke the school interception record in 1973 with 10 interceptions including three interceptions against East Palestine.  He was honored a 1st Team All County, and All Area 1973 and 1974.  He was Team Captain in 1974.  John unselfishly gave up his position at safety his senior year when he as asked to be the quarterback.

In basketball, John played four years, earning three “Varsity B” letters.  He was named to the All County and All Area Teams in junior and senior years.  In 1974/75, John made 12 out of 14 field goal attempts in one game – a school record 85%.  He was given the “Mr. Hustle” Award in 1973/74.  John averaged 14.2 to 16.2 points per game during his basketball career.

John also played baseball his freshman and sophomore years.

Doug Dawson - Graduated 1985

In football, Doug was named the Team Most Valuable Player, was selected as first team quarterback on the All Columbiana County Team and honored as the Evening Review’s Football Player of the Year in 1984.  He led the Ohio All-Stars to their first ever victory over the Pennsylvania squad in the midsummer Penn-Ohio Football Classic.

Doug holds the Beaver Local records for the most passing yards in a single season (1,649), most passing yards in a single game (313), most completions in a season (129) and the longest touchdown pass – 89 yards.

Doug played baseball for four years and was named to the All County Team as a catcher.  He holds the county record for throwing out potential base stealers in a season – 16 runners.

Doug played basketball for three years and led the team in offensive assists his senior year.

 Doug attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania on a full football scholarship where he played varsity collegiate varsity football for two years.  He was awarded an academic scholarship to attend Kent State University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree.  He holds a Masters Degree from John Carroll University.

Doug is currently an educator with the Canfield Local Schools.  He married to Jennifer, also an educator, and they have four sons, Andre, Jake, Will and Max, and one daughter, Elle.

Dave Doak - Graduated 1969

Dave was a standout football player at Beaver Local High School.  He was named All Buckeye Border Conference in his junior and senior years.  As a senior, was named the Most Valuable Player and Best Defensive Back Awards and received the coveted Harry T. Greenwood Award.

Dave went on to play football at the University of Findlay.  He was awarded the Best Defensive Back Award his freshman and sophomore years.  He was named to the All Hoosier Buckeye Conference every year.  In 1971, he was named second team All American NAIA, and Most Valuable Player.

Dave was involved in the fund raising ($200,000) and the building of the West Branch School District Athletic Complex.  He coached flag football at West Branch from 1987-96.  He was a College and Career Sunday School Teacher at the Sebring Church of Christ 1984-95.

He is married to wife Rebecca and they have two sons, Kyle and Drew.  Kyle played football at the University of Findlay and Drew at Mount Union College.  All three Doaks were strong safeties.

Scott Dubberly - Graduated 1970

Scott received 8 varsity letters playing sports at Beaver Local High School.  In football, Scott was name the Team Defensive Most Valuable Player, All County and All Buckeye Border Conference as a junior.  As a senior, he was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player, and received the Captain’s Award.  He was named to the All County Team and All Buckeye Border Conference.

In basketball, Scott was named the Team Most Valuable Player and received the Captain’s Award as a senior.

In baseball, as a junior, Scott received the Team Most Valuable Player, the Captain’s Award and the Highest Batting Average Award.  He was named to the All County Team and the All Buckeye Border Conference Team.  As a senior, he received the Captain’s Award and the Highest Batting Average Award.  He was named to the All County Team and the All Buckeye Border Conference Team.

After graduating in 1970, Scott accepted a full baseball scholarship to Kent State University.

Scott has been married to his sweetheart and partner, East Liverpool native Susan Simms for 28 years.  They currently live in George.  They are the parents of twins, Katie, a student at AASU in Savannah and Christopher, a student at Mercer University I Macon.  Scott is a self-employed utility contractor and real estate investor.

 

Randy Hoppel - Graduated 1979

Randy began wrestling in the early 1970’s, and was a member of the first junior high team at Beaver Local Middle School.  Randy’s four year overall high school record was 72-19.  As a freshman, he won the Beaver Local Invitational.  His record was 14-4.  As a sophomore, he placed 2nd at the Sectional and was a District qualifier.  He was named to the All Area and All County Team.  His record was 18-6.  As a junior, with a record of 23-6, he placed 2nd at the Sectional, 3rd at the District and 5th at the State.  He was named to the All County Team and the All Area Team.  As a senior, Randy was undefeated in the regular season.  He was the MVP of the Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling Tournament.  He placed 1st at the Sectional, 2nd at the District, and 6th at the State.  He was again named to the All Area and All County Teams.  He received the Dike Beede Award.  He finished his senior year with a record of 17-3.

Randy continued his wrestling career at Kent State University and West Liberty College, where he as a three time national qualifier.

 

Bill Pancake - Graduated 1999

William Pancake Jr. is a 1999 graduate of Beaver Local High School.  While participating in three varsity sports, he earned nine varsity letters – two in football, three in basketball and four in track.

In track, he  won six Columbiana County titles, five OVAC titles, seven District titles and three Regional titles.  He was a two time State Qualifier in 1998 and 1999, competing in two events in 1999.  The track teams, he participated on, won four consecutive league titles, two Indian Valley League titles and two East Liverpool Track League titles.  He was voted 1999 Columbiana County Track Athlete of the Year by the Ohio State Track Officials Association.

Bill was a three year letterman in basketball on teams that went a combined 31-9 in this junior and senior years.

Bill is married to the former Korey Sprouse, also a Beaver Local graduate.  They have two children, Leah, who is five years old, and Williams III, who is three years old.  He is employed in the family business at Pancake Auto Body and currently serving as an assistant track coach and head cross country team coach.  He served one year as a high school basketball coach at Heartland Christian School, and one year as head coach of the Beaver Local Middle School track team.

 

Jamin Pastore - Graduated 2001

Jamin was a standout athlete for the Beaver Local Beavers in football.

In 2000, he was named a First Team All Ohio Quarterback.  He was Mr. Ohio Football nominee and a top five finisher.  He was named to the 1st team Eastern District and was named the Eastern District Division III Offensive Player of the Year and the Eastern District Division All Divisions Player of the Year.  He was named 1st Team OVAC and 1st Team All County and was the Columbiana County Offensive Player of the Year.  He was named by the Review 1st Team All Area and Offensive Player of the Year.  He was named by the Morning Journal as 1st Team and Player of the Year.  Jamin was twice the Channell 33 Athlete of the Week.

At Beaver Local, Jamin was a two time Football MVP, three year Football Team Captain and a four year Varsity Football Letter Winner.  Jamin holds the BLHS single game and career rushing yards records, the single game, season and career rushing touchdown records, the longest punt return record and the single game, season and career all purpose touchdown records.  Jamin also played two years of varsity baseball and wrestled for one year.  He was 2001 Class Valedictorian.

Jamin was a three year Duke University Football Letter Award winner.

 

Lee “Pudge” Myers - Special Category - In Memoriam

Pudge was born in 1923.  While attending East Liverpool High School, he played varsity football in 1939, 1940 and 1941.

He was married in 1944 to the former Lois Carroll.  They had two sons, David, a 1963 Beaver Local graduate, and Daniel, a 1969 Beaver Local graduate.

Pudge helped coach early football teams at Beaver Local and assisted in many ways in the development of an athletic program.  He was instrumental in the construction of the football field, the entrance, the ticket booths and press box.

At the time of his death in 1967, he was serving on the Beaver Local Board of Education.

Pudge spent many hours in support of the district.  He was devoted to its causes and was always willing to support and encourage the students of Beaver Local.

 

Jill (Davis) Sylvies - Graduated 1978

Jill was a four-year letter winner at Beaver Local in track.  She advanced to the District Track meet three times and was the first female athlete from Beaver Local to advance to District competition.  She held the long jump record of 16’4” from 1978 to 2001.  Jill received the “High Point Award” all four years in high school and was voted “Most Valuable Player” for three years.

In basketball, Jill was voted to the All Area and All County Teams her senior year.  She averaged 12 points and 14 rebounds that year.  The 1978 team was the first girls basketball team to win the Sectional title and ended with a record of 16-3.

At Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Jill was a four-year varsity player and was named to the NAIA District 22 All Star Team her junior and senior years.  She was honored as the Team Chaplin and the Most Valuable player her junior and senior years.  Jill was one of the first female athletes from Beaver Local to participate in four years of collegiate athletics.

Jill has worked as the assistant girls basketball coach at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, coached the Mount Vernon Middle School girls basketball team, and has been the assistant track coach, soccer and tennis coach at Beaver Local.

Jill is married to Dr. Robert Sylvies and has two children, Breanne Gunter, a student at Duquesne University, and Brady Gunter, a student at Beaver Local.

Jill holds a Bachelor of Art Degree from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and a Masters of Education Degree from Miami University.

She has taught at Trotwood Madison School District near Dayton, and presently at Beaver Local High School.
