Bill Barnhart was an excellent athlete, but his outstanding performance on the basketball court won him many honors. A three-year letter winner in basketball, he averaged 18 points per game as a junior and 24 points per game as a senior. His many honors include First Team All Buckeye Border Conference, First Team All County, Leading Scorer in Columbiana County, All Eastern Ohio Player, All Tournament Team at the Salem Sectional and the Beaver Falls Invitational, and Honorable Mention All Ohio. At the Beaver Falls Invitational, he set a record scoring 38 points in a game. During this time, there were only two divisions in the state, A and AA. Beaver Local was in the big school division, AA, which further enhances Bill's accomplishments. Being a profile shooter, he may have set many more records had there been a three-point shot in basketball at that time. Bill received a scholarship to play basketball at Youngstown State University, a Division 1-AA school. He continued to play basketball until an injury, which required surgery, sidelined him his senior year.
Rex Campbell - Graduated 1968
Rex is the only Beaver Local Athlete ever drafted and offered a professional sports contract during his senior year. Rex was an athlete that excelled in all sports. During high school, he played football, basketball and baseball. In football, he was named All County and Buckeye Border Conference, despite playing only four games, his senior year, due to two shoulder separations. He was the leading scorer on the basketball team his senior year, averaging over 18 points per game. This 16-2 record basketball team had all five starters averaging over 10 points per game. Rex was named to the All Buckeye Border Conference Team. Although a well-rounded athlete, his true athleticism was on the baseball field. Once again, Rex was named All Buckeye Border Conference. His senior year, he was the Most Valuable Player and he led his team in home runs, RBIs, doubles and triples. Rex was drafted in the 13th round in the major baseball league draft by the Detroit Tigers. Rex had numerous college offers for scholarships in football, basketball and baseball. He accepted a scholarship offer to play baseball for the Ohio University Bobcats, then changed his mind and played baseball at Youngstown State.
Tim Fenton - Graduated 1975
Tim was one of the top athletes to graduate from Beaver Local. During his career, he earned nine varsity letters, three in football, two in basketball, and four in baseball. Tim was named as a first team member to both the All Area and All County football teams during his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was selected as the Columbiana County Lineman of the Year in 1974 and a First Team Tri-County All Star during that same year. Tim was also the leading scorer on the 1973 undefeated football team. In basketball, Tim earned the Coach's Award as a junior and was selected to the All Area and All County first teams. In addition to his four letters in baseball, Tim was named the outstanding pitcher in his sophomore, junior and senior years. He holds the distinction for pitching the first no hitter in the sectional finals. Tim was selected captain of the 1975 team. Tim's miscellaneous awards include outstanding member of the senior class, the Dike Beede Memorial Award, the Evening Review Top Area Athlete Award (senior year) and was voted one of the top ten athletes by the Evening Review in 1999.
Dennis Klembara- Graduated 1968
In 1968, he was presented the Harry Greenwood Memorial Award as Beaver Local's outstanding student athlete. He was a three-year letterman in football and baseball, and a two-year letter winner in basketball. As a three-year starting quarterback for the Fighting Beavers, he set school passing records. His awards include All State Honorable Mention, All County First Team, All Buckeye Border Conference First Team and Most Valuable Player his senior year. Dennis received a football scholarship to Youngstown State and set new passing records as he played. He is a member of the Youngstown State Football Hall of Fame. Dennis was a catcher and outfielder on one of the most successful Beaver Local baseball teams. His baseball skills brought him recognition and college scholarship offers, but his love of football sent him to YSU.
Larry Roberts- Graduated 1966
Larry played fullback on the 1965 football team. He was selected First Team All County, First Team All Buckeye Border Conference and Most Valuable Player. He was the leading scorer in the county and was named Outstanding Senior Athlete. Larry was a four-year varsity basketball player and was selected First Team All County. He led his team in scoring and was selected the Most Valuable Player. In track, Larry was also a four-year varsity performer. He participated in six different events and set school records in all six. He set the Buckeye Border Conference meet record in the shot put, a record that still stands today.
Stephanie Coie - Graduated 1985
Stephanie Coie was a well-rounded athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball and track. As a member of the track team her junior year, she was a member of the 4 x 800 relay team that set a record that still stands. She was a First Team All County and Review player in volleyball and was Most Valuable Player her senior year. Her best sport, however, was basketball. She was a three-time All Area First Team for the Evening Review and Salem News, three-time All County First Team, three-time Offensive Player of the Year for Beaver Local and Most Valuable Player in her junior year and senior years. Stephanie also made First Team All Eastern District and All State Honorable Mention. Her senior year, she was the Evening Review and Salem News Player of the Year. Stephanie also the 1985 rrecipientof the Dike Beede Memorial Award. Stephanie's outstanding performance in basketball enabled her to receive a full scholarship to Youngstown State University where she was a starter all four years for the Lady Penguins. She received the Most Valuable Player Award her senior year.
Monica Lisle - Graduated 1988
Monica was a standout in both volleyball and basketball. As a senior, she captained a volleyball team that still holds the school record for victories in a season (16). Monica was named to the All County Team in both junior and senior years. She was named to the Eastern District First Team All-Star squad following her senior season. Monica also achieved high marks in basketball career. As a sophomore, she was elected as the Most Improved Player and Honorable Mention All County. She was First Team All County during both her junior and senior years. She was selected to the First Team District All Star squad following her senior season. Monica earned an undergraduated degree from Ohio State University and a graduate degree in Secondary Education from the University of Pittsburgh.
Van Possage, Jr. - Graduated 1990
Van was one of the top wrestlers in Beaver Local history. He started wrestling at the age of five in Hoppel's gym and started wrestling competitively through the Beaver Local Wrestling Club. Van was an instinctive wrestler and tough competitor. During his high school career under Coach Walt Maslen, Van garnered many honors. These honors include State Champion his senior year, Hoppel Tournament Champion, Beaver Local High School Most Valuable Player, Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Tournament Most Valuable Player, All County Wrestler, Wadsworth Tournament Champion, Sectional Champion, District Champion, and placed sixth in the nation his senior year, giving him the title of High School All American. He also received the Harry Greenwood Memorial Award and was a scholar athlete, placing him in the top ten percent of his class, academically. Van recorded many wins during his high school career. His record was 121-28 and he was the first Beaver Local wrestler to record over 100 wins. After graduation from high school, he received a scholarship to wrestle at Cleveland State University.
John C. Williams - Graduated 1995
John was a wide receiver on the Beaver Local Football Team from 1992 to 1995. In 1995, he led the Beavers in receiving with 24 receptions for 308 yards. John was selected to the All Ohio Second Team as a defensive back and was a First Team All County receiver. In addition, John was named First Team All Eastern Ohio and First Team Quad County. He was selected for the team for the Penn-Ohio All Star Game in 1995. John also played basketball and ran track in high school. John graduated from Beaver Local in 1996 and went on to play football at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He was an economics major at Allegheny.
Mike Mays In Memoriam
Mike was a long-time area resident and a 1962 graduate of Beaver Local High School. He was married to Terry Lynn Holden Mays and has three children. He was a co-owner of the Mays Brothers Construction Company, Inc. Mike was active in baseball and wrestling during his school years and later enjoyed volunteering his time and energies to support youth sports programs in the area. He started out with the Little Beaver Wrestling Program, heading the Little Beaver Wrestling Tournaments. He was a former president and member of the Beaver Local Wrestling Boosters and a member of the Beaver Local Athletic Boosters and the Beaver Local Music Boosters. In the late 1970's during the Beaver Local budget crunch, Mike recruited, scheduled and supervised volunteers at the Middle School and High School sporting events. Mike headed the work detail for the new Beaver Local Football Stadium in the 1980's. The next decade, Mike assisting with the construction of the new Sports Complex.
